I would look hard at the various envelope follower wah ckts used by
guitarists (of which there are many on the web). These guitar fx
people never use 2 parts when one will nearly do. Start with the 
Dr Quack (a much improved version of the EH DrQ)

If you are looking in textbooks look for 'ideal half wave rectifier'
which is a very simple op amp & diode arrangement that overcomes the 
diode foward voltage drop problem.
