I think I remember seeing a book on early (analog!)
AI back in the 60s by W Grey Walter (UK)who made little
turtle things much like todays robot kits (was a 
behavorist, possibly first to notice 'emergent behavior'
but never made any big deal of it).
His main point was thet the complexity of interconnection
has more effect on complex devices that the mere 
number of parts.
I think this is something we overlook, in designing weirder modules.
