Hi Doug:

The SP-0256A-AL2 is the GI factory ROM version of the SP-0256A, 
allophone version 2. The -012 version is the Intellivision version with 
words common to video games in ROM. No idea what the -017 is.

The applications booklet you have might contain the information on 
how to use the external serial input. This is probably what Ken 
needs to use the SP-0256-012.
