Thanks Mitchell, Edu, Rene, Ian for tips (hope I mentioned everyone!)   The window
comparator idea is an interesting one.  I have two reservations.  First, ability to
get acurate turning.  As someone mentioned, one trimpot per tone with tuning of each
is a possibility, but a real pain.  The other problem is the amount of circuitry to
cover a whole range of tones.  Just three octaves (which seems a minimum) would
require 9 quad comparator chips, with supporting circuitry.  I'm thinking that the
clocked stairstep approach might be a better bet.
