Many mixing consoles (not sure about your mixer, better check it out)
have overload protection. These are diodes tied to power supply rails
(usually +15 and -15V).

This will limit the headroom. The high frequency harmonics created by
the heavily distorted waveform will pass trough and $%*#@! the audio
signal... 

You need a fast (called "brickwall") limiter, with a FET.
