[sdiy] Phonetic Speech generation

( yes, beleive it or not this is part of a synth project I'm cooking )

Has anyone run across schemetics or discussions on *old* phonetic speech
generation circuits?  Too many of what I've found are based on chips that
havent been made in years and all the newer stuff is digital and doesnt
have the sound I want.  Even hints pointing at older textbooks would be
good.
