The more I look at the keyboard bushing problem, the more I think that I'm
going to rip up another (smaller) keyboard and pull out a complete row of
metal fingers and bushings.
On the old Pratt & Reads, the fingers at the front of the keyboard (the ones
that act as guides and hold the rubber bumpers) are all part of one piece of
metal that's pop-riveted onto the front of the frame. I could drill out the
pop-rivets, and graft the row from the sacrificed keyboard onto the ailing
six-octave. This should restore the whole thing.
Fortunately the bumpers are in good shape. Many times I've seen them rot and
fall apart, rendering the keys noisey and misaligned.
I did have to replace some of the white keys, but I needed to retain the
lead weights in the originals. I found out that if I shattered the plastic
around the weight, the epoxy-blob with the lead weight inside remained in
the shape of the inside of the key. I could then force this into the new
key, with enough friction to wedge it in permanently. I was pretty happy
about that - I really didn't want to have to mix large amounts of new epoxy
because I always seem to get it all over the place. Great glue but messy.
The various chips I've been able to find on the web at various sites - I
forgot the names, but I bookmarked them. Hopefully the 726's are still good.
I even have a couple of spare 50240's. I may need more - wasn't there just a
thread about that lately? Did we find a source for those? Maybe I need to do
another google-search....
I've been studying the schematics more - they're in my travel bag so I can
read them on plane flights every week. Much better than crossword puzzles.
I'm sure my fellow passengers are getting a chuckle out of this. Just trying
to make sense of the wiring harnesses makes my brain hurt.
