If I were a gear manufacturer and was sending out items for review, I'd be
damn sure to have a modified version of the firmware in it with a time
lock-out. They'd have to send it back for 'repair' after a couple of months.
Easily done with a microcontoller and bb-ram, but probably harder to
implement in valves/tubes...
