[sdiy] My filter input mod isn't working...

So I attempted a filter input mod to my Mono/poly today, based
on these instructions from Scott Norlund:
www.mohodisco.com/monopoly/filterin.html
I did everything just as directed except for two things. Instead
of using a 50k audio taper pot, I used a 10k. When I went to
Radio Shack they didn't have any 50k pots, just 10 and 100.
Today I chose the 10k because I guessed that less resistance
would allow more volume through; don't know if that's correct
logic or not, I'm still pretty new at this stuff. Also, I didn't solder
anything to the KLM-355 circuit board as directed, I simply
touched the bare wire to it, to test it before I comitted to anything.
Well it didn't work- sort of. When I touch the wire to the PCB
just before the R1 resistor, I hear the input audio, but very trebly
and very quiet. And when I turn down the cutoff, nothing changes
about the sound. So, per the instructions, I touched the wire to
the solder bump after R1. No sound there at all.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,
Lava
