Hi Rob...
The lower voltage and higher current "might" work because small transformers
suffer
from poor load regulation... often 20-25%. So the lightly loaded 16V unit might
do
18V at 2/3 the rated current.
I assume the 12V -3A was an AC wall wart ? You might do a switcher in that
size...
but probably not an AC output.
Hey there's a new idea. Use an offline switcher, and synthesize a 12VAC
regulated
sine wave from it... that would make the magnetics nice and small ... ;^)
