In my experience, audiophiles are those for whom music provides a mystical
experience. Sadly, perhaps their only method of experiencing Magic in life.
Mysticism has always been linked to ritual, if the ritual of modifying your
CDs increases your enjoyment, what is the harm? And paying way too much for
something in order to give it "magical" properties is also a time honored
tradition.

I am sure each person on this list has had a mystical experience through
music and sound. The shape and form of these experiences is fantastically
varied. I am intrigued by complexity, others by precise reproduction, still
others by simplicity. Each approach is as valid as the next, since the goal
is the same: To have an experience which is beyond the ordinary.
