I think one important aspect may not be understood here.

Digest mode is often an option that you assert when you subscribe to a list.
If you want the digest mode, the command is something like "subscribe
thescum at surfree.com synth-DIY digest."  You'll then recieve a large,
concatenated message every so often, with many posts inside.

For folks who don't assert that option, you'll get the regular flow of
little mails instead.  A digest doesn't have to be at the exclusion of the
regular list, but rather an option to be used if so desired.
