first time I came across this approach was upon opening up a second-hand prodigy in 1982- it was an early serial number that had grown some extra toggle switches in the mixer section, so I had a look and was surprised to find a "logic" device being used for audio. it works very well, but what it lacks (for me) is the character that a genuine second oscillator adds. in fact, that's my main complaint about roland stuff- too often they stick in a single oscillator and this sub circuit and maybe a chorus.
got me wondering- a cheap, low-part vco, maybe not so hot on tracking, but soft-locked to the main oscillator...... anyone tried this?
