I missed part of this thread so sorry if I'm repeating someone.

One use for the Z input is to make a simple circuit to dim 
the trace when there's no signal when you are 
using it for X-Y. Then it doesn't burn a spot in the center. 

I had a lot of fun when I was a lab assistant in school and 
there was no class. I'd stack up every signal generator in 
the lab and have them am and fm modulate each other and
connect to a scope's xyz.
