The 1N34 diodes are germanium diodes which have a very low forward voltage drop
and good high frequency response. I don't think that silicon diodes will be the
equivalent in your circuit. I remember seeing them still available from a
common source, but can't remember where.

On the NPO question, this signifies that the capacitor is relatively
temperature stable in its capacitance value. This should make the hf
oscillators frequency stable since these caps are probably in the L-C tank
circuit that determines the basic oscillation frequency.
