Perhaps you are thinking of the word "portable" instead?
In the US, "mobile" usually refers to a piece of equipment that is used in
a vehicle, while "portable" is often used to refer to a piece of equipment
that is made to carry, and doesn't need to be mounted in a vehicle.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that very early car phones did use
tubes. *Do NOT* confuse this with *cellular* phones in use today. This was
a totally different system altogether. Most people have never used one of
these phones, because at that time, only wealthy people could afford one.
By the time mobile phones had became affordable for the masses, this older
technology had long been obsolete.
