And a little bit to reign this back to the synth-DIY camp:

There's a nice discussion of vector display design in Hal Chamberlin's
Musical Applications Of Microprocessors.  Uses some DACs and slewing
circuitry to make an automated "line drawer" module (with X, Y and Z
outputs, of course!).

It's ertainly interesting to see what some familiar circuits can do in other
situations.
