Thanks for all the replies.. I know if I had _access_ to a scope I'd be
able to find out exactly what the problem was. Budgetary constraints suck ;)

Well, I'll desconstruct that sucker and see what I can find.. if I discover
anything crazy like an alien transmogrified FET injecting martian basic-cable
transmissions, I'll post here.
