I've used the Z input occassionally in laboratory setups. The general idea
is that the intensified portion of the trace can be driven by an external
event which occurs in sync with the scope trace, but at a delay time that
needs to be either set or measured. It's mostly useful on single-trace
scopes, or for measuring one-shot events. For periodic signals it's more
usual to use a multi-trace scope.
