There is a new replacement for MAX called Pure Data (PD) that runs on
Windows and Linux:

It's in beta right now, but looks promising. Oh yeah, and it is free.
I haven't begun to play with it much, but I've used MAX on the Mac and
it is the perfect companion for a MIDI2CV converter and a modular.
The price however is pretty steep. PD is by Miller Puckette, the
original author of MAX (http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/puckette96pure.html).
I haven't tried the emulator you mention, but most others I've tried
weren't all that great at running music apps (no sound or midi support,
problems with timing, etc.)
