Well. I did laser shows professionally for 20+ years, we used to draw
images and animations on the sides of buildings.  It took about 10 watts of
laser light, projected about 100 to 500 feet.  Now consider how much power
it would take to go 240,000 miles.

Wouldn't it only need enough power to make it out the atmosphere ?
Shouldn't be much loss in space.
Still a good hundred miles or so.
What about a satellite projector ?
