Yes very well, but are those the same bits?

I understood Atrac to be this, (as explained by my teachers at Sonology)
It's a FFT (fourier) that is done in real time by a neural network chip.
in some 74 frames per sec.
The outcome of this FFT is written on to a roughly 320MB disk.* (50% reduction)
That's only Frequencies, phase and volume per freq. Not all freqs are
written down, higher and softer freqs right next to louder lower ones are
left out, on the grounds that your ear does so as well/ can't do better.
(masking)
In playback, the recorded freqs are reproduced by sinewave generators.**
(digital 'sine'wave generators that is).

*Writing is magnetic, reading is optical.
That's why you have cheap MD _players_

**That's why MD walkmans do not have digital out. It would mean adding a
"DD"convertor.

Note that the way it plays back is a lot different form the way it records.
Thats a totally new concept.
Futhermore, the techniques used by MD were considered impossible some 15
years ago, as realtime FFT alone was far from possible then.

BTW, the neural network does not learn anymore, it's merely the way
elements are hooked up inside. It only knows ATRAC.

BTW, I asume that due to the personal differences in hearing, especially
with physical fenomena like masking and wetware postprocessing, your
mileage with MD may vary from person to person, and from track to track +
from ATRAC typ to ATRAC type. I do like the sharp, I do not like the sony's.
