Professional recording people regard mp3 as an ugly joke.
Some of them have been talking about starting a
grassroots organization to oppose the increasing
use of mp3 in commercial recordings. They can't really oppose
its use in web-based music distribution, but they feel that
putting mp3 music on regular-distribution CDs is a step backwards.

Vacuum Tube Valley ran an article of mine about this last
year, in issue 14..... we asked some working recording people
about lossy digital compression, and most of them were VERY
hostile about it.
