Right, but I run ISO 8859-1 or ISO Latin 1, ASCII doesn't work well
with things like ÅÄÖ which I depend upon for a non-American languague ;)

Right. I sadly have been forced to use it for professional usage, but
for my private stuff... no MS stuff at all! Serious, I have been able
to relax with my usage of computers since I let that stuff go. Since
Win 3.11 for Workgroups it has gone downhills... ;)

Nope. Broken stuff, don't use. Patent pending all over it. Use JPEG or
PNG. Those are patent free and seriously supported open standards. GIF
is a no-no!
Sadly enought, the full JPEG standard is not free from patents, so
what most of you perceive as JPEG is a well established subset and
file format called JFIF.
