I've been thinking about the fan noise issue lately as well..It's not a
critical issue right now, but will be if I want to do any open air recording
down the road. I'm probably going to get a 1 unit rackmount box and modify it
so that a mac motherboard yet (I haven't decided what I'll go with yet for a
board, which will govern how the case gets done, but It'll probably be end up
being an LC of some variety, either a 68040 LC475 or a 68030 LC. I'd punch
out the back of the chassis with the correct holes for the connectors, then
mount the board in there, and add a large heatsink out of my junk box on the
processor rather than using a the fan from the machine. I've also been toying
with the idea of mounting a mac SE on top of the rack, but then there's the
issue of where to put the monitor for the PC I plan to mount in the rack for
doing sampling and recording. With an LC board running a midi monitor, I
could use a mac-PC video connector adapter and a video switch to switch the
monitor between the two systems.
