ASM-1 slot that says leave out

I'm finally getting off my duff and assembling my ASM-1.  Its embaressing how long I've had it and the parts. I couldn't help but notice upon close examination of the board that in the VCO in the square out path there are a couple solder holes and the tracing for a resistor or cap... Thats normal, but on the layout it says to leave empty.  Any info. on this would be great.  Could I stick a pot here or do I need to add a resistor first.  Or is this a spot for a jumper?
