Not so crude !! The link below will lead you to the DOD FX-30 noise
gate, with mod to use an external trigger.

Use diodes to prevent wrong polarity going into the circuit.


  (+ in)  ----------->|----- to circuit (+)

from                diodes
jack

  (- in)  -----------|<----- to circuit (-)


Old Rane audio modules used telephone connectors. Works fine, since you
don't need to connect/disconnect every day...
