Crude noise gate

I was wondering if anyone had a link to or ideas for a very simple
noise gate. I would like to put one on the input of a distortion
circuit, so high quality is not an issue and I could live with (some)
little pops and clicks. Maybe a transistor that shunts the signal to
ground or somthing? This thing runs off +/-15v.
By the way... What do people use for power jacks on pedal type things
which require bi-polar power? I've been using 1/4" stereo jacks for a
long time, and a pile of burned out op-amps can tell you it's not the
best idea!
	Thanks,

oooooh hey it's 2001 now. do I know how to party...
