Hi Evan
The first thing you need is an advanced degree in Electronic Engineering
(though some here get by with a PhD in Astrophysics ;^)
NAAH !!!
Yes the Craig Anderton book would be good. Start really simple
and work up. Better to make a simple working flashlight than
some unit that does nothing !!! Builds skill and confidence.
I'd llok for a soldering iron of at least 25 watts and no larger
than 40 watts. Avoid really low wattages. Most folks agree that more
heat and less time is better than low heat for a long time.
The Weller WLC-100 is a low cost favorite... they sell for as
little as $30, includes temperature adjustment and built in stand.
Buy extra tips, you will need them. Bigger tips last longer, smaller
are easier to use. Somebody has this on sale right now (who?)
Also get a decent digital multimeter, get one that can measure millivolts
and milliamps. These start at about $30 also.
You can buy better units as your budget allows, especially the meter.
You will buy maybe once in 10-20 years if you get a good one.
Welcome to our obsession! Once you start to collect the tools and
parts of the trade, you can go to your work area and whip up a new toy
in an hour !!!
