thanks.... the .pdf and Gene's caution in the literature where a tad misleading.

No VCA.... 

"This module is pretty easy.  Make sure to use normal signal diodes like the 1N4148 or 1N914.  The op-amp can be anythng dual - TL082, LM358, 1458, etc.  There may be some hi- frequency oscillation on the VCA output - if there is, add about a 30pf cap across the (-) input and output amp, across the 560K resistor.  You can solder this on the back side if you want."
