[sdiy]Touch pads?

Hello list,
I'm trying to design a custom midi controller / knob box with all (eh,
some of) the bells and whistles my current keyboard lacks. One of those would
be having a couple of trigger pads with more function than the trivial note
on / velocity, eg. note off and aftertouch.

Has anyone come up with a simple and affordable implementation of this?
I've heard of pressure sensitive resistors, but can't seem to find a source for
them. Then there are various breeds of strain gauges but they appear
prohibitavely expensive and/or inaccurate.

Although this is best suited to demonstrating my utter lack of electronic
skills, you could allways drop a comment on it, ie. why it won't work ;)
