If you really want to increase your chances of winning a bid, bid within
the last minute or the last few seconds (it's called sniping). I've got
some software called Turbobid that does it for you (you don't even need
to be at the computer).
Something to add to the "if selling" pointers:
Put in a real good description - assume you are educating people that
aren't familiar with what you're selling.
Pictures! They're worth a thousand words, you know.
After the auction is over:
Good communication. Always respond to any emails sent to you, even if it
only says "OK". Be proactive. If you're selling, send a "congratulations
you're the winner" email. If you're bidding, send a "Hi, I'm the winner"
email.
