these are fixed length acoustic delay lines. inside is a cut peice of glass 
or quartz, and 2 piezo elements.. signal is applied to one, vibration waves 
set up in the glass element make their way to the other piezo after a finite 
propagation time and then are detected.. quite interesting to look at the 
glass.. sometimes marked with little diamonds - these mark the 'null points' 
- the wave reflects back and forth around the glass a few times in a zigzag 
pattern.. you can see where it goes from the pos of the elements..
