[sdiy] what is trigger signal?

I have recently come to terms with this and if your confusion is like mine 
was, well, a trigger fed in to a gate input of a monosynth will be like 
tapping a key quickly, so no sustain, so the envelopes need a decay and maybe 
a release, haven't messed with attack yet, so maybe.  where as a gate signal 
adds the sustain level into the picture as previously described.  you could 
have gotten that from the previous posts, but to put it into newbie I thought 
I'd contribute.
