  In the meantime, have a look at Microchip appnote #AN511, which shows
an example of PLD replacement using PICs, the example being a 7-segment
decoder:

  The target device in the appnote is the venerable 16C54, but the same
thing can be done using the 16C505 with its internal clock and 12 I/Os.

  Using a 16C54, I've done up to 4 multiplexed digits, using the segment
driver lines for both data input and segment drive output in various
combinations.
