Definitely. I seriously doubt that this would pass code anywhere! Someone
put the dimmer in after the place was wired. I second the motion to replace
it with a regular switch.
Actually, I hate switched outlets as well. If want to dim the lights get
some cheap X-10 modules or something. Go to X10.com (warning: once they get
your email address they spam you with all these crazy offers at the end of
every month).
And once you have a variac you'll never want to be without it again, just
like a 'scope.
