most likely it is a generator effect.. a current is generated in a
conductive object when moved in a magnetic field. in a highly conductive
short circuit like the path around an aluminium block, that current can be
very high. the current represents energy extracted from kinetic energy. thus
the block resists motion and falls slower.. you can see the same effect by
feeling the torque required to turn a good quality motor with its terminals
open compard to short circuit...
I saw a neato demo of the effect once - a big electromagnet gap cant
remeber, I think it was ac field.. put one solid aluminium plate in the gap,
one with long grooves holes.. there are less eddy currents in the one with
holes so it fals faster.. the solid one moves like it is in oil!!
