Well..., then you would have to remove the capstan and pinch-roller that drives
the tape, as that's usually where they are located. You could always drive it
with the take-up reel if you weren't picky about speed regulation. Harder to
engineer on a closed tape loop. 

I always thought I would cut a hole on one the side of the cassette tape itself
and relocate the erase head there, just to the side and mounted at 90 degrees
to original. This would require some other small mods to the cassette as well.

A lot of the speed controls are built into the motor, with the trimpot accessible
through a small hole in the back. You have to partially disassemble the motor
to get at it. And some older units are mechanically speed regulated with governers.
