I have heard this ( used to own it ) and I am ticked that I cannot
remember the name - the entire album was excellent as well...
The sound effect was one of extreme narrow-bandwidth
slightly-resonant filter shifting through the vocal chorus of a
   song.

And actually, did a quick Google check and it was the song "God is
   alive / Magic is afoot"

Ahhhh.... I clearly remember that song getting some airplay on New
York's WNEW-FM in the early '70s. That little snippet has stuck in my
head all these years and I never knew who did it. Thanks!

A side note:

I grew up in New York, and in the early 70's the New York FM stations,
the few that existed, would play the most wonderfully interesting
music. That was when FM was new and somewhat experimental, at least
from a market standpoint, and the stations were the exact opposite of
today's heavily commercialized operations with focus group selected
playlists. (At least this is the case in the US.)

It was really great to sit back for an evening and listen to stoned
DJs put on some strange ambient piece, read poetry, and then play some
Gentle Giant or Caravan (reference to recent discussions). Their
audience was very receptive to that sort of thing too.

I understand there were also some California stations in the 70's that
were like this. As well as some of today's college stations.

Way off topic again...
