well yeh, I been thinkin about that too, but not the camera one... there are 
1000+ element single row ccd sensors in old scanners/faxes... not only that, 
I collected a few and located the spec sheets... the mode of opn is actually 
suggestive that this is highly possible... the image sensors are not a 
bbd... the image sensors sense the image, then parallel load into a bbd, 
which then clocks this data out serially..... one device I found 
particularly promising is the TCD 102 single line ccd sensor.. its an early 
model, and has a test pin not used in ordinary operation, but it appears to 
feed directly into the first stage of the bbd for testing... with this one, 
it should be possible to bypass the whole image sensor array and only use 
the bbd section.. newer chips seem to lack this feature.. unfortunately, I 
could not find any inofo on the use of this test pin.. data sheet on
