[sdiy] Other applications of CEM chips?

Since CEM chips are so hard to find NOS these days, I started wondering: what 
else used them besides synthesizers? I tend to have access to a LOT of scrap 
electronic gear, and I've run across useful chips before (BBD's used in a 
satellite comm link system). If any old gear besides synths used them, this 
could be a good way to get hold of them.
