Those are probably "PEM-serts"... they are pressed into the metal from
the opposite side, and hold in place by the pressure of the deformed
metal. They ARE hexagonal in shape. Slight flexing (and age) probably
cracked the paint. It will probably not spread further.

Check out TomG's EFM site. He has a Midi converter that he designed around a
PIC micro from Trevor Page (hope I got the right name...).
PCB and Micro available as a semi-kit.
