Actually, the phony bass used in the Seinfeld soundtrack is brilliant, within
its context. A real bass, no matter how expertly played, would never have
been as funny, or as supportive to the show's subversive concept.

I think much credit is due to Larry David, the creator of the Seinfelf show,
for the use of music in that show. If you have a chance to watch his latest
effort, "Curb Your Enthusiasm", on HBO, you will know what I mean. The music
he uses is very different from that used in Seinfeld, but it has a similar
effect on the overall feeling one gets while watching. I am certain that
Larry David's main inspiration in the area of soundtrack music was Nino Rota,
who scored almost all of Federico Fellini's brilliant films. Both Seinfeld
and Curb Your Enthusiasm have a very Fellini-esque feel (and sound) to them.
Not bad for TV, I'd say. If only they could have done Seinfeld without a
laugh track!
