For scanned documents, I definitely prefer single GIF files over PDF's.
PDF's may be easy to print, but they can be very difficult to edit, and I
very often find it necessary to edit downloaded schematics - especially if
the original scan was not done very well. Also, a PDF will never have the
original clarity of of the scanned bitmap images that are put into it.
However, If your image was originally made as a postscript vector-based
image, then the PDF is usually OK (Such as the schematics that one can
download at the Rane website, for example). This is a rare case, indeed.
Two more things - Scanned schematics should always be done as black and white
GIF's - not grayscale, and definitely not color JPG's (unless color is an
important part of the original document, in which case the color depth should
be limited to the relevant colors only). Scanning should be done at no less
than 300 dpi, so any small details and small text will retain its clarity and
readability.
