also, any halfway decent image editor should let you chose the color
depth.  if the scans are b/w choose two colors.  black and white..
then you can save in a higher res, and still have a relatively small
file.

if it has red (like some newer roland schemos) just save it as three
colors, but you might have to mess around finding the correct red.. :)
