[sdiy] bitrate reduction

A quantizer can perform this function. The design published in
Electronotes many years ago (EN#124) showed use of the quantizer as a
timbre modulator.

Your basic analog quantizer uses comparator stages to form an analog
successive approximation or flash type converter. This works for
resolutions up to 4-7 bits. This type of circuit requires no clock.

Bernie Hutchins still sells Electronotes:

Subject: [sdiy] bitrate reduction

hi
Is there any way to do bit reduction other then using a DAC and ADC,
like maybe something like the PAIA 4 bit digitizer with a clock, can
this
be done in anyway? mainly somehing useing opamps so i do not have to
order
parts for this.
