If finding parts is something you don't want to do, I would recomend
a Paia kit. (http://www.paia.com). Paia has two different synths. The
Fatman and the 9700S. The fatman is the least expensive, but, I think
you really need to operate it with a Midi Keyboard. The 9700S can
definately be used without a keyboard, but is much more expensive.
Another alternative is http://www.ele4music.com/. He sells bare PC
boards that you populate. However, documentation is very minimal.
These may or may not be a good idea for a first project, depending on
the level of your electronic skill.
The Paia kits have much more detailed instructions.
Now if you want to build something from just a schematic, look

This is the ASM-1 board. The circuits are fairly simple, the
hardest part to find is the MAT-02 (or equiv).
And if you are really into self abuse, go look at my web page. Lots
of circuits...
