Scott, my thoughts exactly. It all sounds quite reasonable.

Unfortunately I haven't drawn it, also after receiving your messages I
tried to power the breadboarded circuit again and it doesn't seem to work
anymore. So I think I'll try Jim's circuit, which I think is somewhat
different.

Jim and Scott, huge thanks to you both. I'll try to breadboard it again
and report the results. (I don't know if I'll have time to do so until mid
next week though I'm afraid).
