I've looked at this too. Jim brings up some excellent points here.
This system has a few things going for it:
a) It looks like it's in excellent and original condition
b) It has all 920-series modules
c) It has a nice selection of modules for whatever noise you might want to
create
c) It would have absolutely KILLER sound
I would agree that if your motive is modular synthesis with excellent audio
quality and wide-range specs, the MOTM would be the way to go, not just for
economic reasons but also for reasons of reliability, support, expansion,
and newer features. Any old Moog will be subject to scratchy pots and
switches, calibration issues, possible bad components, burned out lamps,
loose keys, bad rubber key stops (which this Moog has, based on the text of
the auction), etc. If you make your money doing music, and productivity is
important, then I'd advise a big MOTM instead.
I myself *like* old Moogs. I *like* trimpots and dirty contacts and
calibrating. It is my hobby. When I play with a system and notice something
that needs work, I stop and do it. It is theraputic for me. I enjoy looking
at the craftmanship (or lack thereof). It makes me think of the era in which
the thing was made, and the technology of the time, and I am both humored
and impressed.
And, I *like* the way that the knobs and switches are laid out on Moogs. I
like the CV and S-trig routing panels because they let you change things on
the fly so that you can actually do a song with the thing, not just stop the
tape and rewind it and lay down another track after re-patching. I like the
921A-921B master-slave arrangement. I like the big cutoff knob on the 904A.
These things you will not find on any other modular.
So $25,000 acutally seems like a reasonable price, for somebody like me. You
won't find them any cheaper, anymore. Resale value is not a factor. This
would not be an investment, unless you need to validate the purchase with
your wife! Oh yeah, you'd have be rich in the first place :)
Best Regards,
- Gene

Well, yeah, I would like to have one too...but...$25,000?...From the
standpoint of
just having a modular, I think that might be just a bit overpriced. Now,
there may be
some collectable value in the thing (it looks like it is in excelent
condition), but, if
I wanted a modular, and had $25,000 to spend, I would sink my money into a
MOTM (and I
am not brown nosing here...).
