I remember seeing a huge Intergraph CAD setup back in 1994 when
I did high school work experience for a large mining company. Many
of the (then) hi-end CAD workstations had a vertical panel sitting next
to the keyboard with 8 rotory encoders and a couple of freely assignable
buttons. Various aspects such as zoom, length etc could all be controlled
by the knobs.. it was a very cool way of working, but I have not seen
anything like that since... maybe SGI making something like that still?
